March is Problem Gambling Awareness Month

March is National Problem Gambling Awareness Month – a grassroots effort that brings together a wide range of stakeholders who work collaboratively to let people know that hope and help exist.

While we’re committed to supporting problem gambling support year-round, we make a special effort each March to highlight this important work. In addition to providing revenue for the programs so important to Oregonians, we work diligently to promote responsible gambling and connect problem gamblers with free, effective treatment. National Problem Gambling Awareness Month creates awareness of problem gambling and available resources.

Watch out for more information as we get closer to National Problem Gambling Awareness Month.

Best Practices

Give Players a Claim Form

When players at your location have a ticket they’d like you to scan to see if it’s a winner, be prepared!
If the player’s ticket is a winner and the terminal produces the “Congratulations!” slip, be sure to give the player a winner’s claim form. If players mail in their ticket or use the drop box to drop off their ticket at Lottery HQ in Salem, not having the claim form will add to the time it takes to process the win. Without a claim form, Lottery staff in Salem who process such claims must either call the player or send them a letter with a claim form.

confirm keno tickets

Always collect and confirm payment before printing tickets. Be conscious of players switching old tickets for newly printed ones and then canceling the transaction and leaving the store before the switch is discovered.
Remember that transactions for Keno games CANNOT be canceled after the game has started. Retailers are responsible for the cost of all printed Keno tickets. Always collect and confirm payment before printing tickets.

discourage “reserved” or “machine on hold” signs

Providing your players with the option to place signs on your Video Lottery terminals when they step away, but have not cashed-out, can cause problems for you and your Video Lottery players.
There have been many reported instances of people walking by a Video Lottery terminal, see the sign, and cash out the Video Lottery ticket from the now-vacant VLT.
This puts you in a bad position when your staff unknowingly pays the “wrong winner.” Without the actual cash-slip, the rightful owner of the ticket cannot be paid.
