February 18, 2014 - Salem, Oregon

It’s Girl Scout cookie time and thanks to that, Shamus Harmon’s day made an unexpected turn this past weekend.

On Sunday, February 15, Harmon stopped at the Market Street Fred Meyer in Salem and came upon a familiar site, a local Girl Scout troop selling their cookies. Shamus made a quick stop at the ATM to get some cash to buy some cookies and decided to check his Lottery tickets at the customer service counter.

“I gave the person at the counter my Powerball®, Mega Millions® and Win for Life tickets to check,” said Harmon, a Salem resident. “No winners for Powerball and Mega Millions but the Win for Life ticket had a message the clerk hadn’t seen before. After doing a bit more checking, she said that I had won the Win for Life jackpot! We were all in a bit of shock!”

Harmon claimed his Win for Life top prize of $1,000 a week for life on Monday, February 17, at the Lottery office in Salem. “I didn’t think the Lottery was open since it was President’s Day,” said Harmon. “Around 10:30 I thought I’d give them a call just to make sure and boy was I happy I did! Had they not been open, I would have had to wait until Wednesday when I got back from traveling for my job. I hadn’t been able to sleep or eat much since Sunday!”

Harmon, who bought his winning ticket at the Market Street Fred Meyer, became the Oregon Lottery’s 36th Win for Life top prize winner. Winners of the top prize have the choice of receiving their prize weekly or a once-a-year payment. Harmon chose the weekly installments.

Win for Life tickets cost $2 each and give players 15 sets of numbers on each ticket. Drawings are every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 7:30 PM.

Since the Oregon Lottery began selling tickets on April 25, 1985, it has earned over $9 billion for economic development, public education, state parks and watershed enhancements.
