On Tuesday, March 17, 2009, Chuck Mickes became the Oregon Lottery’s first $1 million prize winner in the Lottery’s first Raffle, the St. Patrick’s Day Raffle.

With the Lottery in the midst of its 12th Raffle game, and sixth St. Patrick’s Day Raffle, who better to offer some sage advice than the Raffle’s first $1 million winner, Chuck Mickes.

Contacted at his home in Camas, Washington, Mickes has fond memories of his historic and fun win. “I didn’t tell my family about winning until we were all together for my birthday the next day,” said Mickes. Then on March 20, Mickes, his wife Caroline and their four children were on hand at the Lottery office in Salem when Mickes claimed his $1 million prize.

So as the first $1 million Raffle winner, what kind of advice would Mickes have for future $1 million winners? “Do something nice for yourself, but be sure to save some of your money and put it somewhere to make more,” said Mickes. Following a moose hunting trip to the Aleutians, Mickes did just that.

Asked if he still plays the Raffle, Mickes said, “Heck, yeah! Why should I stop? Since I won, my friends and family all play, too!”

Tickets for the 2014 St. Patrick’s Day Raffle are still available, but are going quickly. All 11 of the Lottery’s previous Raffle games have sold out prior to the winning numbers announcement. Winning numbers for the current St. Patrick’s Day Raffle will be announced on St. Patrick’s Day – March 17, 2014.

Since the Oregon Lottery began selling tickets on April 25, 1985, it has earned over $8 billion for economic development, public education, state parks and watershed enhancements. In that same period, it has paid its players more than $23 billion in prizes.
