Ten years ago, six employees of the same Medford shipping company began playing Megabucks as a group. As the designated ticket-buyer for the group, Linda Cowden had checked their Megabucks tickets many times over the past decade. Following the Sat., Jan. 25, Megabucks drawing, Linda saw something she had never seen before – all six of the winning numbers.
“I took our tickets into the Spring Street Market,” said Linda, speaking of the Lottery retailer where she always buys the group’s Megabucks tickets. “When I put the ticket into the ticket reader, it came back with a message about having to go to Salem. So I asked the clerk to check the numbers and she said it looked like we’d won the jackpot!”
The group arrived at the Lottery office in Salem on Jan. 30 to collect their prizes. Each member of the group chose to receive the one-time cash payment. Linda and Wes Cowden as well as Dawne and Mike Desimone received $400,000, before taxes. Doyle Tucker and Dean Hunt both received $200,000, before taxes.
Since the Oregon Lottery began selling tickets on April 25, 1985, it has earned over $8 billion for economic development, public education, state parks and watershed enhancements. In that same period, it has paid its players more than $23 billion in prizes.
