Cindy Degner had not played Megabucks for nearly three weeks when the urge to play struck her. Luckily for Cindy and her husband Randy, she bought a Megabucks ticket for the Dec. 21 Megabucks drawing and won the $9 million Megabucks jackpot that night.
After checking her numbers Sunday morning, Cindy woke Randy to tell him she’d won. “Of course, I didn’t believe her,” said Randy.
“I had Randy hold the ticket and I read him the winning numbers,” said Cindy. “Then we went to the 7/Eleven to check the ticket and they said we needed to go to Salem. I think he was pretty convinced by then!”
Cindy bought her winning ticket at 7/Eleven #14500 on SE Powell in Portland. When the Portland couple claimed their prize on Dec. 23, 2012, they became Megabucks millionaires #241 and #242. Splitting the prize and taking the cash option, each of the Degners received over $1.5 million from the jackpot win.
Since the Oregon Lottery began selling tickets on April 25, 1985, it has earned over $8 billion for economic development, public education, state parks and watershed enhancements. In that same period, it has paid its players more than $23 billion in prizes.
