The Oregon Lottery® would like to urge people this holiday season to make sure the recipient of any Lottery game ticket be 18 years of age or older.

“We urge everyone that during the holidays, or anytime for that matter, not to give Lottery tickets to anyone under the age of 18,” said Oregon Lottery Assistant Director for Sales, Marketing and Retail Services Stacy Shaw. “Age restrictions are in place on buying Lottery games and we feel it’s just as important that we ask that those same restrictions extend to the giving of these games.”

While age restriction messages are prevalent on all Oregon Lottery sales terminals and tickets, additional responsible gambling messages are being added during the holiday season. The “give responsibly” message will appear on the Lottery’s holiday games website pages, reminding visitors not to give Lottery games to anyone under the age of 18 as gifts. Online digital shorts will also appear in the same theme as the Lottery’s holiday TV ads conveying the give responsibly message, as will Scratch-it gift envelopes.

This marks the sixth year that the National Council on Problem Gambling and the International Centre for Youth Gambling Problems and High-Risk Behaviors at Canada’s McGill University have partnered with lotteries around the world, including the Oregon Lottery, to share the message - lottery tickets should not be purchased as holiday gifts for children.

Oregon Lottery proceeds have provided and will continue to provide funding for free, confidential and effective problem gambling treatment programs statewide. Since the statute dedicating those funds for that purpose was enacted in 1992, over $70 million in Lottery proceeds has been directed to fund problem gambling treatment in Oregon.
