Police warn public of “Mega Millions® Giveaway” phone scam

Portland police are warning residents to beware after a 60-year-old Portland woman was targeted by what police are calling a phone scam.

Last week, the woman began receiving calls from phone numbers 876-419-6771 and 817-376-9326, police said. The male caller, who identified himself as “Jon Farrell,” told the woman she had won the Mega Millions Giveaway and that she had to pay the caller $425, which the caller said a representative would pick up from the woman’s house, for tax dues.

Police said the numbers from which the calls were made were already under investigation by the Federal Trade Commission and Nigerian law enforcement.

In 2010, an 87-year-old Mount Angel woman lost $9,500 to phone scammers claiming her grandson was being held in a Haitian jail.

Officers encourage people not to pick up the phone when a foreign number shows up on caller identification devices.
